Assuming The Worst: Challenging My Own Narrative And Taking Personal Responsibility

We've all been there—stuck in our own bubble, letting our minds spiral into the worst-case scenarios, or, sometimes, the overly dramatic. We get so wrapped up in our own stories that we forget to ask: What if I'm looking through the wrong lens?

The Eye-Opening Moment

While working on a project with a colleague I’ve known for over 15 years, I caught myself getting frustrated. Not just frustrated—really frustrated. I was blaming him for things that weren’t getting done, and yeah, those tasks were on him. But 15 years? We’ve done this dance before.

And like clockwork, I got angry, passive-aggressive, and expressed my frustration by pointing out everything that was wrong with his part and how it was wrecking the project.

Flipping the Script

But for the first time, I stopped and asked myself, am I jumping to conclusions here? Was it really ALL his fault, or was I letting my own narrative run the show? That moment of reflection hit hard. Maybe, just maybe, my reactions had more to do with my own narrative than anything else. I mean, after all, the pattern I discover I was in, was not onesided. It had two sides and I was one of thoose.

Owning It

In the chaos of it all, I realized something: Instead of tourbleshooting and finding solutions, getting organized, planning steps and making sure we actually hit the all the marks, I was busy looking for someone to blame. It was easier to point fingers and avoid taking responsibility for my own part in the mess. But let’s be honest—if I wanted things to change, I had to change.

Stepping Into Action

That was the wake-up call. No one was going to magically create for me, the change I wanted. Waiting for circumstances to change or for others do what we expect them to do? Not an option anymore. It was up to me to take the reins, to be the driver of the change I was craving. You know, "Be the change you want to see in the world".

The Shift

As I thought about it and reflected, something clicked. The walls of blame and assumption started to crumble, and in their place, a sense of empowerment rose. By questioning my own story and taking ownership of my actions, I opened up a whole new world of possibility—one I had never thought to explore before.

Final Thoughts

The path to self-discovery isn’t always easy. It asks us to questions our old beliefs and face some hard truths. But when we challenge our assumptions and take responsibility for our part in the things that frustrate us, we don’t just empower ourselves—we create a ripple effect and the whole word around us changes too.

So, the next time you catch yourself assuming the worst, take a breath. Question your narrative and give yourself permission to rewrite it in a way that puts you back in control. Your journey to self-discovery and growth starts now. The power to shape your reality has always been in your hands.
