Showing up for yourself even when you know you will fail

Last weekend was very busy; my kid had a lacrosse tournament, and he had several games from Friday to Sunday.

Seeing the stamina and energy of those boys anywhere from Kindergarten to 8th grade was outstanding. There was joy and pride in wearing their uniform and talking about playing and winning.

These kids are playing hard; even when tired, they take a quick break and go again to the field. In between games, they laughed and supported each other, joked, and played a little more. It was refreshing to see how, in the middle of all the hate and craziness in the world, there is still hope, connection, and humanness.

One team, in particular, had my admiration, a team that had lost every game during the season. You see, COVID was hard on them, and their team dissolved; most of the players were first-time players just learning the game.

This team showed up to the tournament; as you can imagine, they lost every game. Not only did they lose, they lost big, but they showed up. They decided to show up against all odds, knowing they might fail.

They decided they could show up and lose every game, or maybe, they could take a chance and win one game. They were not discouraged by their historical performance because practice makes perfect. Because if they want to win next year, they must have the courage to show up.

I keep thinking about these boys and how much they will learn from this experience. I learned so much from watching them. How many times have I given up on myself because I thought something was hard and couldn't do it.

At what point in life do we lose the courage to show up even when we know we might not get the results we want? But if we don't show, we are even further away from getting those results.

I invite you to take risks, show up in your life, even when you know you will fail, and give it everything you got. You might be surprised by what you discover in that effort.
