Never judge a book by it's cover, things are not what they seem. These are very common phrases, it talks about expectations. We can be happily surprised or on the other hand, be disappointed when things are not the way we thought they were.
I am an avid hiker and aim to go to different trails because I love discovering new places. However, this week we went to a trail we never think about during the summer, know you, it's a winter trail because we go snowshoeing. But to may surprise, I LOVE this trail, it was not what I expected. The snow had melted to give way to beautiful shrubs and tall trees. It was vibrant with color and life.
The sight in the rail made me look at those phrases in a different way, but most importantly, what we am missing out when we simply assume, when we don't question, when we hold on to an idea or feeling because it was the best thing that happened to us. Or the opposite, we hold on to regret, resentment, we don't want to give a place or ourselves another chance because we have been let down.
When we hold on to good or bad experiences, we are denying ourselves the opportunity to grow, to learn from our mistakes, to make space for new things to come into our lives. We are missing out on the great things to come because there is no space in our lives. We can create memories or we can create expectations, expectation might always disappoint, I will not always be able to play in the snow. Memories, when we let them be free, with no attachment, are simply things that are, no strings attached.
A picture is worth a thousand words, so here is the picture from the same log during Winter and Summer. Look at the pictures and think, what are you missing out on because things are not what you expected?
